Renault 5 Mk1 Tires (1972–1984) – L, TL, GTL, LS, TS, TX
The Renault 5 L (1972–1984), Renault 5 TL (1972–1984), Renault 5 Automatic 1.4 (1978–1984) and early Renault 5 GTL, including later Renault 5 Laureate L and TL models, were fitted with 135 R13 tires.
Top quality classic tires are not currently manufactured in 135 R13. A close correct period alternative size is 145 R13. In 145 R13, Longstone recommends the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67. The 145HR13 Michelin XAS FF is also very good in this size.
Later Renault 5 GTL models, along with the Renault 5 LS (1974–1976), Renault 5 TS (1974–1984) and Renault 5 TX (1982–1984) including Renault 5 Laureate GTL models were fitted with 145 R13 tires.
For Renault 5 TS tires, Renault 5 TX tires and later Renault 5 GTL tires in 145 R13, Longstone recommends the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, with the 145HR13 Michelin XAS FF as an excellent alternative.
Renault 5 Alpine & Gordini Tires (1976–1984) – Alpine, Gordini, Alpine Turbo
The Renault 5 Alpine (1976–1982), Renault 5 Gordini (1976–1982) and Renault 5 Alpine Turbo (1982–1984) were fitted with 155/70 R13 tires.
High-quality classic tires are not currently produced in 155/70 R13. The 145 R13 size remains the best alternative and maintains the balance and steering characteristics of these lightweight performance models. Longstone recommends the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, with the 145HR13 Michelin XAS FF also very well suited.
Some Renault 5 Alpine Turbo models fitted 175/60 R13 tires, in this size Longstone recommends the 175/60 HR 13 Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2.
See tire details: CA67 | XAS FF | Pilot Exalto PE2.

The Renault 5 TD (1985–1990) and Renault 5 GTD (1985–1990) diesel models were fitted with 155/70 R13 tires.
As with other Supercinq models originally on 155/70 R13 tires, Longstone recommends the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 145HR13 Michelin XAS FF.
Renault 5 GT Turbo & GTE Tires (1985–1991 / 1986–1990)
The Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 1 (1985–1987), Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 2 (1987–1991) and naturally aspirated Renault 5 GTE (1986–1990) were fitted with 195/55 R13 tires.
For Renault 5 GT Turbo tires in 195/55 R13, Longstone recommends the 195/55 VR 13 Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2.
See tire details: Pilot Exalto PE2.

Classic vs Modern Tires
Unlike modern square-shouldered tires designed for stiff suspension and minimal body roll, classic radial tires are designed to work with softer, more compliant chassis. As the Renault 5 leans in a corner, a rounded-shoulder classic tire progressively loads onto its outer edge, maintaining grip and delivering predictable breakaway behaviour.
Modern tires, by contrast, are engineered for flat cornering and rigid platforms; when fitted to a classic car with greater body movement, they can lose grip more abruptly. Choosing a true classic tire therefore preserves not just originality, but the progressive, confidence-inspiring handling balance these cars were designed around.
Renault 5 Classic Tires - CA67
The 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 is a classic radial tire from Pirelli's original CINTURATO family; the range that helped define the modern steel-belted radial in Europe. Engineered specifically for sports cars of the late 1960s and 1970s, the CA67 offers light, progressive and genuinely engaging handling characteristics.
Its compliant carcass and rounded shoulder profile suit the geometry of early Renault 5 models, preserving the steering delicacy and balance that made these cars enjoyable to drive when new. In 145 R13, the CA67 remains one of the best period-correct choices for Renault 5 Mk1 tires.

Renault 5 Classic Tires - XAS
The Michelin XAS is a classic high-performance radial tire introduced in the late 1960s. It was one of the first tires designed with an asymmetric tread pattern, using different tread characteristics on the inner and outer halves to improve cornering stability, directional control and straight-line cruising. This design delivers predictable, progressive grip through bends and suits the lightweight, softly sprung dynamics of cars like the Renault 5.
The Michelin XAS FF version uses Michelin’s Formule France (FF) compound, a specialised rubber mixture originally developed for competition and rally use. This race-derived compound offers enhanced grip and sharper response compared with the standard XAS, though it may be more performance-focused than necessary for the steadier base Renault 5 models.
Renault 5 Turbo Best Tires - TRX
The Michelin TRX system was an advanced integrated wheel and tire concept using a metric bead diameter and a matched wheel profile so the tire and wheel function as one system. Unlike conventional inch-based fitments, TRX optimised carcass shape, sidewall flex and contact patch stability under load, delivering precise steering response and consistent grip through cornering. If your car has millimetric TRX wheels, then TRX tires are the very best option.

Pilot Exalto PE2 Tires
The Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 is a high-performance radial tire developed for lightweight performance hatchbacks and compact sports cars. The PE2 is designed to provide strong lateral grip, stable braking and consistent wet-weather performance. Its asymmetric tread pattern and reinforced shoulder blocks improve cornering precision while maintaining predictable progression at the limit.
Renault 5 Inner Tubes
Our period fitment guides list all Renault 5 models as fitting tube-type wheels that require inner tubes up to 1980. Our 1982 Michelin guide below lists all models as fitting tubeless wheels, suggesting the switch happened in the early 1980s. It is likely that not all models switched to tubeless wheels at the same time, check your wheels if in doubt.
The ideal tube for 145 R13 tires is the Michelin 13CG. We always recommend Michelin's tubes because they are made with high build quality and better materials, leading to better performance and fewer failures over time.
Tires with a profile below 70% (e.g., 190/55 VR 340 Michelin TRX) are not designed for inner tubes and must be fitted tubeless.

Renault 5 Tire Fitment & Pressure Guides
Drivers often wonder if vintage pressure specifications remain valid given the advancements in modern rubber compounds and manufacturing. We consulted with the technical experts at Pirelli, who offered the following guidance on applying period data to today’s classic tires:
"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tire characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”
