MGA Tires Explained

MG MGA Crossply Tires

The MGA came standard with a 560 - 15 crossply tire. The MGA's performance would benefit from a radial tire that is more adapted to present day roads and traffic conditions, providing superior grip, stopping power, and balance. For the MGA the ideal radial alternative size to 560 - 15 is 155-15. In this size we recommend the 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67; the CINTURATO would be a superb choice for your early MGA. It will keep the steering light and responsive. The later MGA 1600 and dual cam vehicles had a bigger 590H15 Dunlop RS5 tire. The best radial alternatives are 165-15 Michelin XAS or 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.

MGA Radial Tires

The CINTURATO is a genuine classic tire. They will not only look great, but they will also make the handling nicely progressive and predictable. Later MGs were also outfitted with CINTURATO. Despite the fact that the Michelin XAS was released later than the MGA, it would have been installed as an upgrade on numerous vehicles in the late 1960s. The corect innertube for these tires is the Michelin 15E.

Michelin XAS Tires

The XAS's design complements the handling of sports cars from the late 1950s and early 1960s, such as the MGA. It was a tire designed to increase the directional stability of automobiles that were now travelling at speeds of more than 60 mph on highways for lengthy periods of time.

MGA Twin Cam Tires

The 5.90 X 15 Dunlop RS5 tires were the original equipment tire on the Twin Cam MGA. Unfortunately, Dunlop no longer manufactures any historic road tires. The finest road tires for a Twincam MGA road vehicle is the 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.

Low Profile MGA Tires

People are often eager to fit bigger tires on their MGA. The use of wider tires makes steering stiffer and less progressive. If you're willing to live with the poor handling, the easiest approach to mitigate the negative consequences of "over tiring" your MGA is to install a period tire with rounded shoulders, such as the 185/70VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N or 185/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX. Fitting anything with a lower profile than this means you won't be able to use tubes, and you'll have a tire with a totally different profile that isn't suitable for automobiles from this era.

MGA Borrani Wire Wheels

Many MGA models had wire wheels installed, and Longstone works with the finest in the industry. Over the years, Ruote Borrani Milano has provided wire wheels to a number of well-known automakers, including Jaguar and Aston Martin. Borrani outperforms all other wire wheel producers in a number of ways. Borrani wheels weigh a quarter less than steel wire wheels due to the aluminium rims, and they are handmade in Italy to the highest standards. We can't think of a better way to dress up your MGA than with a set of Borrani wheels; check out their site by clicking the Borrani link at the top of the page.

MG MGA Tire Pressure

At Longstone we have sourced a variety of tire fitment guides ranging from the pre-war era to modern-classic cars, including fitment and tire pressure suggestions from top tire manufacturers such as Michelin and Pirelli. These guides can inform your crossply tire pressure and radial tire pressure choices. See below for the relevant fitment guide/s.
