Aston Martin DB6 Series 1 Tires (1965–1969)
Aston Martin DB6 Series 1 models, produced from late 1965 through to 1969, including the DB6 saloon, DB6 Vantage, and DB6 Volante, were specified in factory literature with 670 - 15 high-speed crossply tires fitted to 5.50 x 15-inch wire wheels. This tire size is consistently listed across UK and European sales brochures from the mid-1960s. The ideal crossply DB6 tire is the 670 H 15 Avon Turbospeed.
Although crossply tires were the default specification in period, radial fitment was available upon request. For tire 1 DB6 models, one factory-fitted radial tire was the 185VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67. This tire was the most sporting radial available at the time and was often supplied by Aston Martin when radial tires were specified at purchase.
Today, the 185VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 remains the best tire for 1 DB6 saloon, Vantage, and Volante models used on the road. Widely adopted by European manufacturers during the mid-1960s, it preserves the original steering feel and balance of the car while offering light steering, good directional stability, and greater consistency than period crossply tires.
Michelin also produced the 185VR15 Michelin XVS, an asymmetric radial tire designed to improve straight-line stability and high-speed control in classic cars. The XVS offers a more steady and neutral driving character than the PIRELLI CA67, favouring stability and refinement over the lighter, more sporting feel of the CINTURATO.
DB6 Whitewall Tires
The XVS was also available in whitewall form, and early DB6 brochures list whitewall tires as an optional extra. For owners seeking a period-correct whitewall tire, the 185 R15 Michelin XVS Whitewall is the correct option.

Aston Martin DB6 Series 2 Tires (1969–1971)
Later Aston Martin DB6 Series 2 models, produced from 1969 until the end of DB6 production in early 1971, including the Series 2 DB6 saloon, DB6 Vantage, and DB6 Volante, adopted wider 6.00 × 15-inch wheels and subtly flared wheel arches.
Factory brochures for the Series 2 DB6 list 815 - 15 high-speed crossply tires as the standard tire specification. There are currently no good quality crossply tires made in the 815 – 15 size, we suggest switching to the best radial equivalent tire size; 205 R15.
For Series 2 DB6 models, Longstone recommends the 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72. This tire was a development of the CA67 and was designed to complement the new generation of powerful European GT and sports cars of the late 1960s, including the Lamborghini Miura and Espada, Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, and Maserati Ghibli. The 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72 was factory fitted to some Series 2 cars when radial tires were specified.
For modern road use, the 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72 remains the most appropriate tire for Series 2 DB6 saloon, Vantage, and Volante models, offering the correct proportions, steering response, and sporty ride characteristics intended by Aston Martin.
Aston Martin DB6 Wider Tires
Some owners choose to fit wider, lower-profile tires to the Aston Martin DB6. While this can be done, it should be approached cautiously, as the DB6 chassis was developed around relatively tall, rounded tire profiles.
On Series 1 DB6 saloon, Vantage, and Volante models, a 205/70 R15 tire represents the most sensible wider alternative. If you do need a wider tire on your Series 1 DB6, we suggest the 205/70 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12, however it will make the steering heavier without significant gains in handling. We suggest keeping the original size and fitting the 185VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.

On Series 2 DB6 saloon, Vantage, and Volante models, a 215/70 R15 tire is sometimes fitted as a wider option. Clearance can vary from car to car due to Aston Martin’s hand-built bodywork, so careful checking is essential. The best 215/70 R15 tire for a DB6 is the 215/70 R 15 96W PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12. Pirelli also make the 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO P5 but it is built for cars with power steering. Again, we recommend keeping the original size and fitting the 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72.
These wider tires are not part of the original factory specification and should be considered a later owner-choice rather than a period-correct fitment.
Aston Martin DB6 Inner Tubes
All Aston Martin DB6 models, including saloon, Vantage, and Volante variants, were fitted with wire wheels. As a result, inner tubes must be fitted, even when using radial tires that are capable of running tubeless on the right wheel.
- For DB6 models fitted with 185 R15 or 205/70 R15 tires, the correct inner tube is the Michelin 15F inner tube.
- For wider tires such as 205 R15 and 215/70 R15, the correct tube is the Michelin 15/17H inner tube.
Where inner tubes are required, Michelin’s tubes are almost always recommended at Longstone. The thicker rubber construction and superior build quality provide better air retention, durability, reliability, and consistent performance in classic car applications.

Aston Martin DB6 Wire Wheels
The Aston Martin DB6 was fitted with wire wheels as standard, and wire wheels manufactured by Ruote Borrani Milano were available as a factory option on DB6 models. Borrani wheels are considerably lighter and more precisely (hand) made than most alternatives, using aluminium rims combined with steel spokes and steel wheel centres, resulting in improved strength, balance, and durability.
For DB6 Series 1 models, Borrani manufacture the RW 3835 Borrani Wheel 5.5"x15" wire wheel in the correct 5.5" × 15" size, matching the original factory specification. For DB6 Series 2 models that adopted wider wheels, Borrani produce the RW 4152 Borrani Wheel 6.00"x15" wire wheel in 6.0" × 15", corresponding to the standard Series 2 fitment. These two wheel types cover the correct original wheel specifications for all standard DB6 saloon, Vantage, and Volante models.
Borrani also manufacture alternative wheel sizes to special order for non-standard applications, however the wheels listed above represent the correct and appropriate fitments for original DB6 specifications.
Aston Martin DB6 Tire Pressure & Fitment Guides
Aston Martin DB6 Radial Tire Pressures
Period tire fitment and pressure data from Dunlop lists recommended pressures of 35 PSI front and 37 PSI rear for a Series 1 Aston Martin DB6 fitted with 185 R15 radial tires. For sustained high-speed driving, higher pressures of 40 PSI front and rear are specified.
We have not seen any surviving factory handbook or official tire pressure documentation published specifically for the Series 2 DB6. However, the closely related Aston Martin DBS, which shares a very similar chassis layout, wheel size, and tire section, used comparable tire pressures, as did the Series 1 DB6. Period tire fitment charts and manufacturer pressure posters from the late 1960s support the use of the same pressure values.
For Series 2 DB6 models fitted with 205 R15 tires, we therefore recommend 35 PSI front and 37 PSI rear for normal road use, with 40/40 PSI for high-speed or sustained motorway driving.
Aston Martin DB6 Crossply Tire Pressures
Where crossply tires are fitted, period data typically lists lower pressures of 26 PSI front and 28 PSI rear, rising to approximately 35 PSI front and 40 PSI rear for high-speed use. Owners should always refer to original handbooks or vehicle placards where available and adjust pressures to suit load, speed, and driving conditions.
